Art Club window paintings bring Christmas Spirit to small businesses

Posted

The Owensville Art Club has created window paintings for local businesses in the winter and spring for the last three years. The fundraising endeavor helps pay for field trips, open studios, plein air events and various other club activities, as Art Club is self-sustaining.

Art Club members and advisor, Mrs. Jessie Bayless, walk down First Street to hand out fliers to businesses, outlining how participation helps build a relationship with the community. It’s $25 to commission a four-by-five-foot window painting. Businesses that commission more than three windows receive a $5 discount on additional frames. Prices may vary based on the actual size of the window.

As members visit with business owners, they try to get an idea what should be painted on the windows. There have been lots of compliments towards the member when they are handing out fliers and when they are painting the window.

Once 10-12 businesses sign up, any other entities that want their windows painted are placed on a waiting list. There is no guarantee that a business on the waiting list will be served.

“Window painting is an amazing fundraiser and teaches our artists practical skills and gives back to the community in a beautiful way,” said Eli Shields.

After the members know which businesses want paintings, they dedicate two days to completing commissioned work before Thanksgiving. If they have a lot of businesses, they dedicate a couple of days in December, but everything varies depending on the weather and the members' busy school schedules.

“We appreciate the community so much for supporting our creative community,” said  Bayless.
