Senior Zack Barch, on Feb. 6, was awarded the $10,000 math and science scholarship, which has been donated and funded by Garry Ebker each year.
Barch earned the highest score on a competitive 60-question test that was taken by 16 qualified students from Gasconade County R-2 and Gasconade County R-2. It was a timed test with 30 math questions covering calculus, trigonometry and geometry. The other 30 science questions covered anatomy, biology, chemistry, and physics.
To be qualified for the test, students have to have a combined score of 50+ on the ACT from both the math and science parts.
Barch said he was shocked and surprised that he won the scholarship.
“I didn’t think I was the smartest one when taking the test,” he said. “I thought it was hard when everyone else said it was easy.”
Bach plans to attend State Tech for the industrial electrician program and to use his scholarship for tools, as well as his tuition, once he transfers to S&T to become an electrical engineer.
